Fostering Sustainable Ecosystems - Sustainable Report 2024

59 Sustainability Report 2024 Fostering Action on Climate Change Fostering Responsible Supply Chain Fostering An Inclusive Workplace GRI Content Index Biodiversity Assessment at BSEZ, Rwanda Present an innovative methodology that integrates wildlife cameras, bioacoustics sensors, and remote sensing to measure and monitor change in biodiversity. Metric and indicator selection to be calculated based on outputs and analysis of data collected to meet BSEZ and certification requirements. Develop sampling design and data collection protocols for BSEZ to monitor biodiversity using wildlife cameras and bioacoustics sensors. Budget, schedule and timeline for BSEZ to deploy biodiversity sensors (wildlife cameras and bioacoustics) within the SEZ based on local capacities. Data interpretation, best practice reporting, and drawing meaningful conclusions from collected data. The Biodiversity MRV Plan for the BSEZ provides a robust framework for monitoring and verifying biodiversity and environmental impacts within the SEZ. By using technologies like camera trapping, bioacoustics, and remote sensing, BSEZ can effectively track biodiversity and land use changes, meeting both national and international standards. This approach allows for proactive management, ensuring that industrial development aligns with ecological preservation. During the reporting period, we partnered with Okala to conduct a Biodiversity Management, Reporting and Verification (MRV) assessment at the Bugesera SEZ in Rwanda in preparation for biodiversity conservation measures. The MRV was developed in accordance with the following standards and regulatory frameworks: National Rwanda Laws: Environment organic law No. 48/2018 – determining the modalities of protection, conservation and promotion of the environment. Ministerial Order N°007/2008 of 15/08/2008 establishing the list of protected animal and plant species, 2008. United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standard 6. The MRV outlines the following action points for BSEZ: Biodiversity requirements to be met in terms of certification and legal obligations and review of the environmental management plan, with the aim of implementing the most adapted biodiversity MRV strategy.
